Volunteers sought for Healdsburg Jazz Festival’s 15th season

Would you like to put a little jazz in your life and at the same time, put a little life into jazz? That’s what can happen when you volunteer for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. It’s a jazzy proposition that hundreds of community members have been participating in for the past 14 years.

With the 15th annual Festival set to happen May 31 – June 9, it’s time once again for music fans, community members and cultural heroes to step up and help keep world-class jazz alive and bopping in Healdsburg and Sonoma County.

Volunteer orientation sessions are now being held for veteran and new volunteers. The sessions will be held Thursday, March 28, Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, May 16. Volunteers do not need to attend all three sessions, but the best assignments are usually taken at the earliest sessions. All sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. and are held at the Riverside Clubhouse, 206 Mountain View Drive, off Matheson (S. Fitch Mountain Rd.) in Healdsburg.

For more information call 433-4644 or email info@healdsburgjazz.org.

Volunteer jobs include setting up and staffing the live musical performances (free music), light office duties and doing support logistics at the venues, concessions or musician assistance. Call it a “work party” with a great soundtrack of America’s most definitive of all music genres.

The Healdsburg Jazz Festival is a non-profit organization with very minimal staffing. It has always run on volunteer power and membership contributions. Volunteer positions are tailored for various skill and interest areas. The only overall requirements are enthusiasm and a team spirit.

This year’s festival opens with two events on May 31 at Costeaux Bakery and the newly opened SHED. The first weekend (June 1-2) is a series of concerts and performances in tribute to the great jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Also performing this year will be Fred Hersch, Charles Lloyd with Jason Moran and Sweet Honey in the Rock.

The 10 days of live music, film, discussions, concessions and sharing can only be made possible by dedicated volunteers. Keeping jazz alive can be hard work, but it is always rewarding. Healdsburg Jazz has always been very appreciative of our many, many volunteers, some who have been with the festival since its early beginnings.
